Chopin Monument in Wroclaw Wednesday, 12 November 2003
It has been five years since Wroclaw Circle of the F. Chopin Society in Warsaw started organizing Chopin Forums, annual Festivals during which inhabitants of Wroclaw have the opportunity to listen to talented young pianists. The Forum commemorates young Chopin's visits to Wroclaw and a concert he gave here in the first days of November 1830. At the beginning of the 1980's Professor Maria Zduniak took the initiative to commemorate the events of 1830 in yet another way. She came up with the idea of building a Chopin monument in Wroclaw. The campaign for the monument is now being pressed by Wroclaw Circle and its president count Wojciech Dzieduszycki. The idea is being implemented under the patronage of Wrocław President Rafał Dutkiewicz, Marshal of Lower Silesian Voivodship Henryk Gołębiewski and Lower Silesian Voivode Stanisław Łopatowski.
The monument's design emerged from a contest which was held in 2001. The winning entry was submitted by Professor Jan Kucz from Warsaw. The monument makes reference to romanticism and depicts Chopin seated in a sofa. The composer makes the impression to be listening to music in some intimate interior. The monument will be made of bronze and its base of dark polished granite. It will be 4 metres high and will be installed in Wroclaw Park Południowy (South Park).
