Szafarnia is a small village in kujawsko – pomorskie province. It is 195 kilometres from Warsaw, 46 km. from Torun and 6 km. from Golub-Dobrzyn. In 1824 and 1825 Chopin spent his holidays in Szafarnia in the house of his school friend Dominik Dziewianowski. In Szafarnia Chopin got to know Polish rural traditions and customs. He composed first mazurkas and published an original local newspaper “Kurier Szafarski”.
Out of two Chopin Centres in Poland one is located in Zelazowa Wola and the other in Szafarnia. The Szafarnia Chopin Centre was set up in 1988. Its main function is to educate children and youth from Poland and abroad about Chopin.
F. Chopin Museum located here is open Monday – Friday from 8.00 am. until 4.00 pm., on Saturdays from 10.00 am. till 4.00 pm. and on Sundays from noon till 5.00 pm. Ticket price (children – 2 PLN, adults – 4 PLN, guide – 20 PLN) includes:
- museum and Centre guided tours
- listening to excerpts of Chopin’s letters
- listening to CD records with Chopin’s music
- self-guided visit to the beautiful historic 3-hectare park
Chopin concerts and competitions are held in Szafarnia.
