The Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1954 by Adam Kopyciński and Radomir Reszke. Initially, it was called the Wroclaw Symphony Orchestra. In 1958 it was granted the status of State Philharmonic. In 1994 the Wroclaw Philharmonic was named after Witold Lutosławski, a distinguished Polish composer.
In 2001 the offices of general director and artistic director were separated, and Lidia Geringer d'Oedenberg was appointed General Director. In the 2002/2003 season Mrs. Geringer d'Oedenberg invited Mariusz Smolij, an American conductor of Polish origin, recognized in the United States as one of the best conductors of his generation, to co-operate as First Conductor with the Wroclaw Philharmonic.
A vast number of excellent soloists and conductors have performed at the Wroclaw Philharmonic. For all these years, most masterworks of world music as well as new pieces by Polish and foreign composers have been presented to Wroclaw music lovers.
