Poznań Philharmonic was founded in 1947 and its orchestra considered one of the most well-known symphonic orchestras in Poland, regularly performs in musical centres of Poland and takes part in numerous tours abroad. From among famous conductors, who worked with the Orchestra, music lovers remember: Herman Abendroth, Roberto Benzi, George Georgescu, Eugene Ormandy, George Szell, Carlo Zecci, Jose Serebrier, Marco Erede, Enrico de Mori. The following famous soloists performed with the orchestra: Artur Rubinstein, Igor and David Oistrakh, Martha Argerich, Rugiero Ricci, Henryk Szeryng, Mstislav Rostropovich, Malcolm Frager, Eduar Auer, Monique Haas, Jean Fournier, Svyatoslav Richter, Gidon Kremer, Maurizio Pollini, Kristian Zimerman, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Narciso Yepes as well as famous Polish singers: Stefania Toczyska, Ewa Podleś, Ryszard Karczykowski, Wiesław Ochman and others.
The Orchestra accompanied the participants of the first post-war F. Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw. Since 1952 it also accompanies to the finalists of the H. Wieniawski International Violin Competition.
In the artistic season 1998/1999 Jose Maria Florencio Junior became the General Manager and Artistic Director of the Orchestra.
